Many of these federations are performing non-financial and financial functions like social and capacity building activities, facilitate training of SHGs, undertake internal audit, promote new groups, and some of these federations are engaged in financial intermediation. The NGO MFI vary significantly in there size, philosophy and approach. Therefore these NGOs are structurally not the right type of institutions for undertaking financial intermediation activities, as the byelaws of these institutions are generally restrictive in allowing any commercial operations. These organiza tions by there charter are nonprofit organizations and as a result face several problems in borrowing funds from higher financial institutions. The NGO MFI, which are large in number, are still outside the purview of any financial regulation. Non-Profit Companies as MFI: (Non-Profit Section 25 NBFC-MFI) Many NGOs felt that combining financial intermediation with there core competency activity of social intermediation is not the right path. It was felt that a financial institution including a company set up for this purpose better does banking function. Further, if MFI are to demonstrate that banking with the poor is indeed profitable and sustainable, it has to function as a distinct institution so that cross subsidization can be avoided. On account of these factors, NGO MFI are of late setting up a separate Non-Profit Companies for there micro finance operations. MFI is prohibited form paying dividend to its member. Mutual Benefit MFI: Several State Governments therefore enact ed the Mutually Aided Co-operative Societies (MACS) Act for enabling promotion of self-reliant and vibrant co-operative Societies based on thrift and self-help. MACS enjoy the advantages of operational freedom and virtually no interference from government because of the provision in the Act that societies under the Act cannot accept share capital or loan from the State Government. Many of the SHG federations, promoted by NGOs and development agencies of the State Government, have been registered as MACS. Reserve Bank of India, even though they may be providing financial service to its members, does not regulate MACS. For Profit MFI: Non Banking Financial Companies (NBFC) are companies registered under Companies Act, 1956 and regulated by Reserve Bank of India. Earlier, NBFCs were not regulated by RBI but in 1997 it was made obligatory for NBFCs to apply to RBI for a certificate of registration and for this certificate NBFCs were to have minimum Net Owned Funds of Rs 25 lakhs and this amount has been gradually increased. RBI introduced a new regulatory framework for those NBFCs who want to accept public deposits. All the NBFCs accepting public deposits are subjected to capital adequacy requirements and prudential norms. There are only a few MFI in the country that are registered as NBFCs CAPITAL REQUIREMENTS NGO-MFI, non-profit section 25 company mFI, and cooperative MFI are regulates by specific Act under which they are registered and not by the Reserve Bank of India. These are therefore not subjected to minimal capital requirements or prudential norms. These MFI desiring to become NBFCs are required to have a minimum entry capital requirement of Rs 2 Crore. As regards prudential norms, NBFCs are required to achieve capital adequacy of 12 per cent and maintain liquid assets of 15 per cent on public deposits. FOREIGN INVESTMENT Foreign investment by way if equity is permitted in NBFC-MFI subjected to a minimum investment of US$ 500,000. INTEREST RATES Interest rates are deregulated not only for private MFI but also for the formal banking sector. In the context of softening of the interest rate s in the formal banking sector, the comparatively higher interest rate (12 to 26 per cent per annum) charged by the MFI has become a contentious issue. The high interest rate collected by MFI from their poor clients is being perceived as exploitative. It is argued that raising interest rates too high could undermine the social and economic impact on poor clients. As most MFI have lower business volumes their transactions costs are far higher than those of formal banking channels, the high-cot structure of MFI could affect their sustainability in the long run. COLLATERAL REQUIREMENTS All legal forms of MFI can waive physical collateral requirements from their clients. The credit guideline of the RBI allow even banks to wave any type of collateral and margin requirement for loans up to Rs 50000. Current status 2009-2010 The Indian microfinance sector presents a strong growth story. Its growth performance was impressively sustained through the liquidity crunch and continued at an increased rate in the second half of 2009. As of March 2009, the MFI in India reported a client base of 22.6 million with an outstanding portfolio of more than $2 billion. Over the past five years, the sector has delivered a CAGR of 86% in the number of borrowers and 96% in portfolio outstanding. Policy Support Given the governments pledge to economic reforms with a human face, it is not surprising that the current finance minister is generally considered to be supportive of microfinance. The states commitment to combating poverty is hardly a new phenomenon. Over the last forty years, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has encouraged a significant expansion of bank branches in rural areas in order to extend credit services to disadvantaged groups, including small and marginal farmers, rural artisans, and other small borrowers. RBI has also required commercial banks to direct 40 percent of there lending to poorer members of society and to priority sectors such as agriculture. The governments 1982 Integrated Rural Development Program (IRDP) was one of the largest poverty alleviation programs to include a microfinance component. Today, national development banks play a crucial role in the growth of microfinance. Despite general support for microfinance, there appears to be a tension between promotion of the sector and client protection. RBI has thus forbidden MFI from taking public savings that would reduce there cost of capital. A similar tension exists at the state level as well, though some states are more active in microfinance than others. Small efforts are underway to explore these segments needs and capacities and evaluate what kind of products and services would allow them to be brought under the financial inclusion umbrella. For example, with help from Lok Foundation, Ujjivan is currently participat ing in a pilot program for the urban ultra poor which seeks to equip them with knowledge and skills that will allow them to eventually avail microfinance services. Moreover, the government has also of late turned its focus toward financial inclusion. This means that policy and regulatory attention on microfinance has increased with the government constituting two high-level committees to provide suggestions on how to improve the financial inclusion scenario in India. This new trend will provide impetus to devise strategies for more inclusive growth that makes commercial as well as social sense. PRODUCT OFFERING Thus far, microfinance institutions have largely limited their product and service offering even within the confines of financial inclusion. In fact, their product innovation has been limited to credit which is intended to serve a variety of needs as shown by the box below. The limited product innovation is understandable given the sectors primary focus has been on refining its business model and gaining scale to become financially sustainable. Despite following a single-product model, the sector has experienced remarkable growth. This growth can only be expected to continue as product innovation and diversified service offerings attract and retain greater number of customers with a variety of needs. The very same clients that the sector currently serves have a plethora of alternate needs for basic products and services, financial and non-financial which can affect sustainable, long-term achievements in their quality of life. Fortunately, recognizing this pent-up demand, mature MFI s are beginning to take concrete steps toward expanding their product basket, at least within the context of financial services. Along with credit, MFIs are heavily exploring the possibility of providing savings/deposit services, micro-insurance and remittance services. SAVINGS Access to a savings mechanism, like that which is available through commercial banks, is usually held by the microfinance industry to be the most urgent need to enhance the economic security of the poor. Due to RBI regulations, Non Banking Microfinance Company (NBFC) MFIs cannot currently accept interest-bearing deposits, unless they provide the service through a Section 25 Business Correspondent conduit. This structure prohibits the conduit from charging any fees to execute this function and limits its reach within a limited radius of the bank branch. MFIs are lobbying the RBI to relax these regulations to allow NBFCs to operate as business correspondents, charge an extra fee for the deposit-taking service and delimit the geographical reach of their operations. These changes would not only make deposits a viable commercial product, but also allow MFIs to offer it to a broader set of clients. INSURANCE While credit can serve to enhance a households income, insurance can serve to cushion the negative economic impact in the event of an emergency. Without insurance, a single incident can often impoverish a household, even with access to micro-credit, especially if the emergency affects the main earning members. A number of MFIs already offer micro-insurance products to their clients. The most basic products insure against health and accidental death. Companies such as Satin and BASIX usually tie the insurance products to their credit products, which makes the availability of credit contingent on the client availing insurance. The rationale behind packaging the loan and insurance together is that often clients do not understand the importance or benefit of insurance until they face an emergency. From a commercial viewpoint, the MFI is in effect insuring its loan against a crisis in the clients household, since insurance hedges against total financial collapse and thus ensures repayme nt of the loan, albeit in a delayed fashion. Similar to customers, BASIX also links livestock loans to livestock insurance for a similar reason it cushions the financial blow and increases the likelihood of a successful loan recovery. We can expect the number of insurance products available to increase as MFIs expand beyond their core credit product and clients become more aware of the benefits of insurance. REMITTANCE Domestic labor migration has a long history in India and is on the rise given disparities in growth across states migrants need a fast, low-cost, convenient, safe and widely accessible money transfer service. In India, remittance services can be enabled by the provision of savings and thus need to be provided in tie ups with banks and post offices. In some cases, MFIs provide remittance services by establishing their presence in a migrant destination to channel remittances back to the community in the migrants area of origin or by establishing a tie-up with another MFI, bank or money transfer company in the area of origin. Going forward, the role of technology will become more important in facilitating the development of alternative channels and payment mechanisms. NON-FINANCIAL PRODUCTS Within product offerings, MFIs are considering expanding their activities beyond the realm of financial services since this can provide synergies linked to future expansion. Microfinance clients have myriads of unmet needs such as healthcare and education as well as livelihood requirements which can enhance their income, employment potential or quality of life. Given MFIs existing relationships with this population segment, they would be an ideal channel to provide these services. While MFIs may not want to delve into product lines that are fundamentally different from their core business, they could easily act as conduits to allow other agents to deliver these services to their customers. The microfinance industry as a whole is now experimenting with a wide variety of potential models that could be used to deliver non-financial services. For example, BASIX offers a host of alternative services to its clients. Beyond the basket of credit and other financial products and services, B ASIX also provides low income customers with livelihood services, including agricultural and business development consulting services, to help microfinance clients use their loans more effectively. BASIX offers these alternative services to its clients through different entities housed under one umbrella. These groups have tremendous synergy and contribute to each others growth and prosperity. The credit business enables customer acquisition, while the insurance business mitigates risk, and agricultural and business development service enables customer retention. The consulting and IT business enhances BASIXs revenues, while the social businesses enable research and development which contribute to BASIXs strategy development. In addition to livelihood services, several MFIs are examining the feasibility of providing critical basic services to deliver low cost healthcare, education and vocational training. For example, Spandana is currently developing a comprehensive low cost heal thcare delivery model focused on the healthcare needs of women and children. BASIX has launched a vocational training academy to impart education in rural development and management to potential job seekers from low income communities. These participants would be deployed in the rural/semi urban areas with BASIX or other organizations offering financial services to the poor. In addition to being important avenues for productive utilization of credit by MFI clients, these types of services have a strong potential.

Store a String Along With a String in Delphis ListBox

Delphis TListBox and TComboBox display a list of items - strings in a selectable list. TListBox displays a scrollable list, the TComboBox displays a drop-down list. A common property to all the above controls is the Items property. Items define a list of strings that will appear in the control to the user. At design-time, when you double-click the Items property, the String List Editor lets you specify string items. The Items property is actually a TStrings type descendant. Two Strings Per Item in a ListBox? There are situations when you want to display a list of strings to the user, for example in the list box control, but also have a way to store one more additional string along the one displayed to the user. Whats more, you might want to store/attach more than just a plain string to the string, you might want to attach an object to the item (string). ListBox.Items - TStrings Knows Objects! Give the TStrings object one more look in the Help system. Theres the Objects property which represents a set of objects that are associated with each of the strings in the Strings property - where the Strings property references the actual strings in the list. If you want to assign a second string (or an object) to every string in the list box, you need to populate the Items property at run-time. While you can use the ListBox.Items.Add method to add strings to the list, to associate an object with each string, you will need to use another approach. The ListBox.Items.AddObject method accepts two parameters. The first parameter, Item is the text of the item. The second parameter, AObject is the object associated with the item. Note that list box exposes the AddItem method which does the same as Items.AddObject. Two Strings for One String Since both Items.AddObject and AddItem accept a variable of type TObject for their second parameter, a line like: //compile error! ListBox1.Items.AddObject(zarko, gajic); will result in a compile error: E2010 Incompatible types: TObject and string. You cannot simply supply a string for the object since in Delphi for Win32 string values are not objects. To assign a second string to the list box item, you need to transform a string variable into an object - you need a custom TString object. An Integer for a String If the second value you need to store along with the string item is an integer value, you actually do not need a custom TInteger class. ListBox1.AddItem(Zarko Gajic, TObject(1973)) ; The line above stores the integer number 1973 along with the added Zarko Gajic string. A direct typecast from an integer to an object is made above. The AObject parameter is actually the 4-byte pointer (address) of the object added. Since in Win32 an integer occupies 4 bytes - such a hard cast is possible. However, regardless of the super-ego’s effort, his id drives him to go alo ng his plan to meet with the devil and makes him justify himself as his resolving that he’ll follow Faith to Heaven after just this journey. Browns meeting with the old man who is the devil himself shows Browns confusion between his id and super-ego. Goodman exclaimed â€Å"Too far, too far! † unconsciously resuming his walk. â€Å"My father never went into the woods on such an errand, nor his father before him. † His super-ego makes him cry that he came too far from his Faith which means his wife and also his own faith and makes him get back home in which his Faith waiting him. Also he mention about that his forefathers wear not involved with the devil. It shows that his super-ego tell him that his innateness is not evil, so makes him think to return. However, his id leads his walk to resume unconsciously. The id makes his body to move into the forest whatever he thought about. Brown also shows signs of his fighting between the super-ego and the id when he found out that his catechism teacher, Goody Cloyse, was a witch who is very involved with the devil. Brown stubbornly said â€Å"Friend, my mind is made up. Not another step will I budge on this errand’. †¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ ‘Is that any reason why I should quit my dear Faith, and go after her. He decided to stop going along his plan, because he realized that his faults, getting in to the forest to meet the Devil, are the same as the old woman’s. So, his super-ego makes him to feel guilty about that and afraid if he could lose his faith. It leads him to want to stay away from the Devil. However, his id makes him want to see what drives all of them to follow the Devi l. Because, he have already had close mind to the Devil unconsciously when he called the Devil â€Å"friend. † It shows what he mentioned that he want to stop continuing his plan anymore was not from his actual true mind.

Because taking inventory of how you’re currently spending your time can help you identify the changes you need to make. When you do a time audit, you’re supposed to record everything . . . including the hour-long â€Å"break† you took to watch Instagram stories while you were supposed to be studying for your history exam. Once you’ve done a time audit, you’ll have another nifty resource on your hands: a list of all of your weekly responsibilities and tasks. You could develop the list from your time audit into a comprehensive list of recurring tasks and responsibilities, then evaluate the items on that list, KonMari style: for each task or commitment on your list, ask yourself, â€Å"Does this spark joy?† Then, keep or discard accordingly. Of course, we know you can’t â€Å"discard† your required math or English courses...but lots of students overwhelm their schedules with tons of extracurriculars because they believe that quantity equals quality to college admissions committees. Additionally, you’ll also figure out where you’re wasting the most time. (Hint: it’s probably the Internet.) Here’s a reality check for you, though: college admissions committees are more interested in seeing your commitment to excellence in a few well-chosen extracurriculars than in seeing that you were a member of a bunch of different clubs or organizations. Taking your list of responsibilities and commitments to task through the KonMari method can help you shave that list down so it only includes things that enable you to grow, thrive, and achieve results that are meaningful to you and to college admissions committees. Win-win! Tip #2: Learn More About Yourself Since you’re the primary curator of your time (at least, in an ideal world), it’s worth it to assess yourself as a part of your time management strategy development, on top of assessing all of the other â€Å"items† in your life. This one’s more of a meta-tip- we’re asking you to really think about who you are, how you function, your strengths and weaknesses, your needs...we’re asking you to self-assess, and then to make plans for time management based on that self-assessment. And, here’s another plus: self-assessing can actually be a ton of fun. Have you ever taken a personality quiz? We recommend setting aside some time to take a personality test or two, then seeing if the results tell you anything new about your personality. That’s one great way to self-assess! Some personality assessments that are commonly used in workplace environments and by colleges and universities include the StrengthsQuest, the Myers Briggs, and the Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator. (You can even take a Sorting Hat Quiz, which isn’t official, but it is fun.) So what exactly can you learn from personality tests that might help with your time management? Well, personality tests usually generate reports based on your responses that provide an analysis of things like: How you perceive the world How you make decisions What motivates you and what stresses you out Your top strengths and weaknesses How you respond to external pressures, like interruptions, distractions, or others’ expectations How you function in interpersonal relationships, like in a team environment or workplace Can learning about these aspects of your personality help you design effective time management strategies? You betcha. We recommend taking your results from these tests with a grain of salt, since no personality test out there is perfect, but getting to know yourself a little better can be really helpful when you sit down to make decisions about your time management strategy. Tip #3: Take Time to Make a Plan and Prioritize We’re going to talk more later about actual tools you can use to keep track of the plans you make, but right now, we just want to emphasize this: making a plan for your week, for your day, and for long-term tasks and projects is extremely important. In order to create plans that prioritize urgent items and make the most effective use of your time, management experts recommend focusing first on effectiveness, then efficiency. We’ll break those concepts down into concrete actions next! Focus on Effectiveness To make a solid plan, first assess the expectations, goals, or outcomes for your day, week, or specific task or project. Take ten minutes in the evenings to evaluate your goals for the next day and sketch out a plan for how you want to achieve those goals. Do the same thing at the beginning of every week. Map out which tasks you want to complete in the morning, afternoon, and evening, and how much time you think it should take to meet your goals for those tasks. Then do the same thing for long-term or multi-step tasks or projects. Carefully read the assignment sheet your teacher gave you for that research paper or final project. Highlight it and annotate it. Ask yourself or others: What should the finished product look like? Who else is involved in this task, and how do I get them to actively participate? What tools, resources, or information do I need to acquire in order to complete this task? Making plans is good. Letting your goals guide your planning makes your plans is even better! Focus on Efficiency The second step to making effective plans involves breaking your tasks or projects down into manageable pieces or stages. As you build your plans, start by asking yourself some questions: When must the entire task be completed, and how much time will it take? Which parts of the task are going to be the most challenging or time-consuming? Which parts of the task can I complete or prepare for early? Breaking big tasks down into smaller pieces can help you allocate your time to completion of that task appropriately. Breaking big tasks down into smaller pieces can also be really helpful if you’re prone to procrastination, or if you get so anxious about big, overwhelming tasks that you can’t get work done. A couple of tried and true approaches to getting yourself going on tasks you really don’t want to do include the â€Å"Swiss Cheese† Approach and the Pomodoro Technique. These methods have some differences, but both encourage you to allocate a small amount of time to working on something- say, twenty minutes- and getting one small piece of it done. Advocates of the Swiss Cheese Approach and the Pomodoro Technique claim that just getting started and getting a little bit done can often give you the confidence you need to push through and finish the bigger task. Even if that’s not the case- or if you don’t have time to finish the entire task in one sitting- these techniques help you chip away at a big task or project over time. If you’ve planned well, you should have plenty of time to complete big projects incrementally and meet both your goals and deadlines. When you're dialed in and focused, you maximize your time. Tip #4: Curate Your Environment Into a Full-Focus Zone Another key to managing your time well is managing your environment. But what does it mean to manage your environment? Here’s an example: researchers have found that increasing natural light in work environments can increase workers’ productivity by reducing negative factors like eyestrain, headaches, and blurred vision. In other words, we’re talking here about how your physical environment affects what you get out of your available time. Now, we know that you have minimal control over your environment at school. But what about when the final bell rings and your time becomes yours again? That’s when you can really take ownership of curating a work environment that enables you to meet your goals and work efficiently. Some questions you can ask yourself to help curate your environment to maximize your time include: How does my workspace make me feel? Calm? Jittery? Restless? What could I change about this space to make it suit my needs? What is distracting me in this space, and is there a way to eliminate that distraction? What sounds, smells, tastes, textures, or visuals motivate me and help me focus, and how can I incorporate them into this space? Simple questions, right? But maybe you haven’t thought about your workspace in this way before. Maybe helping you focus and get your work done is just a matter of filling your workspace with some natural light, finding a more comfortable chair, or turning off your phone until you get your urgent tasks completed. So evaluate your workspace and figure out what’s best for you. Working in a space that works for you will decrease the amount of time you spend on physical distractions, which means you’ll be using your time more effectively! Tip #5: Take A Breather Managing your time effectively isn’t just about penciling work into every available second in your day. It’s also about scheduling in breaks so that you can get more out of your work time. Taking planned, meaningful breaks can replenish your energy and motivation when you start feeling sluggish or distracted. Taking a breather is an important time management technique! You could use the self-assessments that we talked about earlier to help you decide how to approach taking breaks. Taking fifteen minutes to stretch, grab a snack, or walk around outside for a few minutes can all be reinvigorating, but you’ll ultimately want to spend your break time doing something that works for you. What we don’t recommend is spending your break times doing something that could easily spill over into the next thing on your schedule, especially if that will make you anxious or upset. For example, if you pick up your phone to scroll through social media and you know you’re going to have a really hard time putting it down and focusing on your work again, just don’t get on social media. Save it for later, when your work is done. Work is important, but it's equally important to make time to relax! Tip #6: Make Time for the Things That Sustain You... You probably know people who skip meals, guzzle energy drinks, or only sleep three hours a night because they’re so busy and stressed. But research shows that sleep deprivation can contribute to various health problems and have negative effects on mood, memory, and concentration. And it’s pretty difficult to thrive if you aren’t fueling your body and brain properly. We understand that, when you’re already stressed and overwhelmed by the mountain of things you have to do, spending valuable time on eating, sleeping, exercise, and leisure can feel like a waste. The problem is, if you don’t dedicate some of your time to doing these things well also, it’s going to hurt your productivity in other areas. So make time to eat healthy, nourishing food, if you can. Take your time eating- enjoy it. Try to get eight hours of good sleep a night. Exercise in a way that makes you feel strong. Pay attention to how your body is responding to the pace of your life. Spend meaningful time with your family and friends. And reward yourself when you meet a goal! You work hard! You deserve to spend some of your time on meaningful activities besides work. Doing so will increase your positivity, and you can use that to catalyze productivity during your working hours as well. Tip #7: ...And Eliminate the Small Things That Don’t Saying â€Å"no† to things is easier said than done, but this is an essential part of effective time management. Even the most talented people can’t do everything, and they shouldn’t try. In order to be excellent at the things that you really want to do, you have to have enough time to learn, grow, and invest in those things...which unfortunately means you’ll have to say no to other things. Now, we’re not talking here about resigning from your officer position in the National Honor Society or dropping varsity choir. We’re talking about developing an instinct for when to say â€Å"no† to the little things that add up over time. These are the things that come up in the middle of the week that you didn’t plan for, the little favors or extra tasks that you’re randomly asked to take on. For example, if you hold leadership positions in organizations you’re involved in or if you’re known for being a high achiever in your extracurricular activities, your advisors or peers might ask you to take on more and more responsibilities because they know you’re awesome. But what can end up happening is that the same people take responsibility for things over and over, even though there are plenty of other people with extra time on their hands and not a lot to do. You could think of saying â€Å"no† to taking on more small things as an opportunity to let other people step up and learn how to lead or take responsibility. If you’re swamped one week and someone asks you to take on an extra task at your student council meeting, consider saying something like, â€Å"My plate is already pretty full this week, but I think Emma would do a fantastic job managing that task. I’ll come with you to ask her if she’d be willing to take the lead on that.† Saying â€Å"no† gives you more time to excel at the things that are meaningful to you. What is stated in the video is indeed very, very useful, if not practical, for anyone. It is all good, if you ask me. however, what I did not like about the video is the last part where Cleese tried to give some rather harsh, inhuman advice to employers about how to prevent their employees from getting themselves into a creative state. This creative state is a result of a few steps and a number of requirements. The steps are quite simple, and this can be summarized as getting into the open mode (the mode of humor and relaxation) and making a decision in it, switching to the closed mode (the realistic and stressful mode) to implement it, narrowing our focus when we have to implement it, and switching back to the open mode when we have to evaluate it and to buy time before we can decide whether to proceed or not. The requirements for one to be able to get himself into the open mode include space, specific time or making time to be in the open mode, enough time to play with the problem before making a decision, acting with confidence, and punctuating the act with humor. These are actually abstract concepts but at least Cleese has made them half-concrete for the layman to understand. I believe I can follow these instructions to the letter, which means that I will follow them without modifying them to my own advantage. However, before anything else, I should always remember the concepts that Cleese underlined in his speech. One of these is the idea that an open state is when a person is relaxed, less purposeful, contemplative, humorous, playful and curious, and that it is being in this state that one can be creative. The Yukon setting is also important because it provides and underlying motivation for the storys protagonist, a   newcomer in the land, a chechaquo to be in such a hostile environment in the first place: profit. The all-too-familiar lure of profit, for gold or for other salable resources forms an underlying motivation for the storys protagonist who is bound for the old claim on the left fork of Henderson Creek, where the boys were already and the protagonist himself is going the roundabout way to take a look at the possibilities of getting out logs in the spring from the islands in the Yukon all of which begs the question: why is a newcomer choosing to go it alone in the Yukon? It was not because he was long used to it   but because he was without imagination and therefore unable to extrapolate from the immediate moment to the probable future. in other words he was unable to understand or visualize the possible consequences of his actions or decisions.  Ã‚   (London 341,42)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Such a disadvantage is less of a liability when it pertains to certain logistical capacities, which the character, indeed, uses in a futile attempt to build a fire and escape his own death as the perils in the story increase. The protagonist is quick and alert in the things of life, but only in the things, and not in the significances; so, to him, Fifty degrees below zero meant eighty-odd degrees of frost and nothing more. He may acknowledge that the conditions are cold and uncomfortable but these realizations fail to alert within him an sense of his frailty as a creature of temperature, and upon mans frailty in general, and this seems to indicate that London intends the protagonist of his story to stand, in some ways, for the entire human race: in ecological terms, out of balance with nature and oblivious to the consequences of ingenuity and technology (London,   342).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The revelation of the characters internal flaw increases reader-identification and sympathy, which is essential to the unfolding of the storys climax and thematic resolution. Because London intends the story to function in some ways as a cautionary tale about the perilous consequences of humanity exploiting nature and living out of harmony with nature,   the reader must be lured into identifying with the storys protagonist as deeply as is possible. london accomplishes this by allowing the protagonists ingenuity, intelligence, and determination to win several small victories along the way to the storys tragic resolution. Each time the protagonist is able to think his way to a temporary solution to his challenges and deathly obstacles, the reader is led to identify more intensely with him and root for his victory over indifferent nature.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In effect, London is leading the reader to root for humanity as represented by the storys protagonist: the reader is encouraged when the storys protagonist manages to build a fire against all the odds and begin the process of thawing out his clothes and body; the reader is deeply disappointed and fearful when a small shingle of snow falls on that fire, extinguishing it and with it, all realistic hope of the protagonists survival. Because the reader has been led to identify deeply wit the protagonist, and with his logistical abilities and even his hard headed realism, this even in the story, the extinguishing of the protagonists fire, lands a symbolically charged blow right on the readers sense of pride in humanity, revealing that the protagonists previously identified flaw: lack of imagination, is actually a variant of pride or self-absorption. In this way, London makes it clear that the human races reliance upon science, technology, capitalism, and pride are the very aspects which bring about a discord with nature. This discord is not portrayed as being merely unfortunate, but it is revealed as being the kiss of death, of extinction, for humanity and all of humanitys achievements. these vast aspects are personalized through the story and demonstrated in microcosm through the sue of symbolic imagery.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Londons story is intended not only to engage each individual reader but also the collective of humanity as a whole. COMETS   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Comets have been witnessed ever since man has been speculating about objects in the nighttime sky and appear in records from the beginning of recorded civilization (Schweighauser 20).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Comets are made up of four distinct features. The first is the nucleus. The nucleus is made up of frozen gases, mostly water vapor with lesser amounts of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, and imbedded in the frozen gases are interplanetary dust and tiny fragments of stony and metallic meteoric material. Some comets, the larger ones, have a nucleus of 10 kilometers (Schweighauser 22). The second feature of comets is the coma. The coma is composed of atoms and molecules of gas that travels with the nucleus. The coma may be up to 100,000 kilometers in diameter. The third feature of a comet is the head. The head is just the name given to the coma and nucleus. The last of the features of the comet are the tails. Most comets have two tails. One tail is made from dust particles and the other, called ion tail, is made gases. As a comet approaches the sun, the frozen gas becomes unfrozen which causes the dust particles to become free. Light pressure from the sun and some other forces cause these materials to move away from the head of the comet and in the opposite direction from the sun. According to Charles A. Schweighauser in his book, entitled Astronomy from A to Z: A Dictionary of Celestial Objects and Ideas, he states that we see comet heads and tails because they not only reflect sunlight, but they also fluoresce—give off their own light—when comets are near the sun. The tails from the comet may be up to 150 million kilometers long each or together. Comets have a predictable orbit. There are one thousand comets that have been charted. Some comets go by the sun once and others, which are called periodic comets, pass the sun repeatedly following a predicable pattern. I have chosen a periodic comet called Tempel-Tuttle. Ernst Wilhelm Liebrecht Tempel and Horace Parnell Tuttle discovered this comet. This comet has been witnessed as early as 1366. The best apparition was that of 1366 when it passed 0.
